INPRISE CORPORATION ANNOUNCES
NEW VERSION OF MIDAS
CIOs Now Can Minimize Bandwidth Costs as their
Enterprises Grow
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. - December 22, 1998 -- Inprise Corporation
(Nasdaq: INPR), a premier provider of integration software and services to Global 1000
enterprises, today announced the immediate availability of Inprise MIDAS 2, which incorporates major
enhancements to its Inprise MIDAS (Multi-Tier Distributed Application Services ) suite.
One of the key offerings of MIDAS 2 is MIDAS Client for Java, which
delivers Java-based thin clients on any platform. Previously, MIDAS-based solutions
operated exclusively in the MicrosoftÒ Windows environment.
"Now, with Inprise MIDAS 2, enterprises are rapidly delivering bandwidth-efficient
distributed-database applications on both Sun Pure JavaTM- and Microsoft Windows-based
thin clients. And, these applications are often the lifeblood of mobile employees, such as
sales and customer-service professionals, who are connected to their enterprise networks
via low-bandwidth or bandwidth-saturated networks like the Internet, WANs, and cellular
systems," said Joe Nicholson, director of marketing for enterprise tools at Inprise
Corporation.
Many large financial organizations are using MIDAS as strategic foundations of their
distributed-database applications.
According to Bernie Cristosomo, vice president of global finance technology
architecture at NationsBank, a division of BankAmerica Corporation (NYSE: BAC), "With
MIDAS, we have precise control over our network resources. This, combined with the
seamless integration of CORBA and COM, provides us tremendous scalability and flexibility.
As we grow through this period of acquisitions, MIDAS enables us to accommodate increasing
numbers of end-users and transaction volume without taxing our network
infrastructure."
MIDAS also plays a key productivity role in the energy industry. "Our energy,
power, and commodities-trading systems derive many of their competitive advantages from
Inprise MIDAS," said Chad Z. Hower, senior research and development manager at Triple
Point Technology. Triple Point provides comprehensive, integrated commodities-trading
solutions to major oil companies, investment banks, shipping concerns, energy companies,
and other global trading organizations. "Customers increasingly ask us for
standards-based, bandwidth-efficient trading solutions. And, with MIDAS Client for Java,
our developers can easily and rapidly build them."
About MIDAS 2
MIDAS 2 simplifies and hastens the
development, integration, and deployment of thin-client, distributed-database
applications. MIDAS speeds data access across all application tiers¾from the client to
the database server¾through fast remote-data access and intelligent data synchronization,
which together optimize network bandwidth. Enterprises now can develop MIDAS applications
with all of Inprise's enterprise tools, including JBuilder, Delphi, and C++Builder. In addition, MIDAS 2 supports
Java, CORBA, and COM/MTS. MIDAS 2 now includes support for intelligent master/detail and
nested tables, as well as Oracle8i object/relational databases. Finally, through
integration with the Inprise Application Server, customers can manage their MIDAS-produced
applications.
About MIDAS Client for Java
MIDAS Client for Java, a key
part of MIDAS 2, greatly simplifies the development of cross-platform, Pure JavaTM thin
clients for distributed-database applications. MIDAS Client for Java includes a set of
Java Beans, or components, designed for JBuilder 2, Inprise's award-winning family of
comprehensive visual development tools. These Pure Java components give developers
cross-platform client access to high-performance multi-tier MIDAS applications.
